  • Transportation and Safety Month
    May 15 2011

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Governor Kitzhaber have announced that May is Transportation and Safety Month.  Preliminary numbers from 2010 indicate that Oregon enjoyed its lowest fatality rate in decades for automobile accidents.  Unfortunately, this was not the case for pedestrians.  Pedestrian deaths were up from 39 in 2009 to 62 in 2011.  As always, visibility is the key for pedestrian safety.  ODOT will run new pedestrian safety ads this year on buses and local radio stations.

The governor has also announced that May is “Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month”, and reminds Oregonians to be alert and share the road safely.

    • Pay attention: your life depends on it. An inattentive driver is the most common cause of work zone crashes.
    • Buckle up every time. Safety belts and child safety seats (including boosters) are the biggest contributors to saving lives in crashes.
    • Pedestrians and bicyclists: Stay alert, be predictable, follow traffic signals, wear light-colored or reflective clothing, and be especially careful at curbs and intersections.
    • Share the road. Don’t tailgate and check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.
    • Don’t drive, walk or ride impaired. Alcohol, illegal drugs and even some legal drugs can reduce the ability to use good judgment.
    • Obey the speed limit. Excessive speed is a factor in many crashes — and the most common one in crashes that result in fatalities.

With the nicer weather, there are more people out riding motorcycles and with the increase in ridership; there is an increase in accidents.  Just in the last weeks there have been two motorcycle fatalities in the State, shtmlwith the last accident occurring yesterday afternoon just east of Woodburn on Highway 211.
